Enclosures with the second characteristic digit marked as 7 or 8 are only suitable for short-term or continuous immersion and are not suitable for water jets (second characteristic digit marked as 5 or 6). Therefore, they do not need to meet the requirements for digits 5 or 6, unless there is a dual marking specified in the table below.
Enclosure Protection Rating
1st Characteristic Digit: Protection Against Solid Foreign Objects | 2nd Characteristic Digit: Protection Against Liquids
IP | Legend | Meaning | IP | Legend | Meaning |
0 | No Protection | 0 | No Protection
1 | ![]() |
Protection Against Solid Foreign Objects with Diameter Not Less Than 50mm (e.g., accidental contact with a hand) |
1 | ![]() |
No Harmful Effects from Vertically Dripping Water |
2 | ![]() |
Protection Against Solid Foreign Objects with Diameter Not Less Than 12.5mm (e.g., finger) |
2 | ![]() |
When the enclosure's vertical surfaces are tilted within 15°, vertical dripping water should have no harmful effects |
3 | ![]() |
Protection Against Solid Foreign Objects with Diameter Not Less Than 2.5mm (e.g., small tools, wires) |
3 | ![]() |
No Harmful Effects When Water is Sprayed on Vertical Surfaces Within 60° Range Effect |
4 | ![]() |
Protection Against Solid Foreign Objects with Diameter Not Less Than 1mm (e.g., small tools, wires) |
4 | ![]() |
No Harmful Effects from Water Splashing in All Directions on the Enclosure |
5 | ![]() |
Dust (Cannot Completely Prevent Dust Entry, but the Amount of Dust Entering Must Not Affect Normal Operation of the Equipment, and Must Not Affect Safety) |
5 | ![]() |
No Harmful Effects from Water Spraying in All Directions on the Enclosure |
6 | ![]() |
Dust Tight (No Dust Entry) | 6 | ![]() |
No Harmful Effects from Strong Water Jets in All Directions on the Enclosure |
7 | ![]() |
After Immersion in Water at Specified Pressure for Specified Time, the Amount of Water Entering the Enclosure Does Not Reach a Harmful Level |
|||
8 | ![]() |
After Continuous Submersion Under Conditions Agreed by Manufacturer and User (More Stringent if the Characteristic Digit is 7), the Amount of Water Entering the Enclosure Does Not Reach a Harmful Level Only Enclosures Marked with the Second Characteristic Digit as 7 or 8 Are Suitable for Short-Term or Continuous Submersion, Not for Water Spraying (Second Digit Marked as 5 or 6), and Therefore Do Not Need to Meet the Requirements for Digits 5 or 6, Unless Dual Marking is Specified in the Table Below. |
Enclosure Passes the Following Tests
Markings and Labels | Scope of Application | Water Spray
Short-Term/Continuous Water Spray | Multiple Use
5 | 7 | IPX5/IPX7 | Restricted |
6 | 7 | IPX6/IPX7 | Restricted |
5 | 8 | IPX5/IPX8 | Restricted |
6 | 8 | IPX6/IPX8 | Restricted |
- | 7 | IPX7 | "Multiple Use" Means the Enclosure Must Meet Both Requirements of Being Water Spray Resistant and Suitable for Short-Term or Continuous Submersion. |
- | 8 | IPX8 | "Multiple Use" Means the Enclosure Must Meet Both Requirements of Being Water Spray Resistant and Suitable for Short-Term or Continuous Submersion. |
"Restricted" Means the Enclosure is Only Suitable for Short-Term or Continuous Submersion, but Not Suitable for Water Spray.
